Timely weather texts rescues Kenyan farmers.

Traditional weather forecasting was relied upon to determine when famers would plant in many African communities. Still amang communities it remains the most accessible and affordable source of weather information. However recurrent and persistent drought, has disrupted the weather patterns in Kenya. Rains no longer set in on expected months making uncertain the traditional weather forecasting.

Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has been producing and providing weather and climate information to safeguard these farmers from further loss. Patricia Nyinguro, a climate scientist at KMD tolf the Africa Climate Podcast thet together with the county; weather information is localized to suit the needs of the county’s diverse stakeholders.

The Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWSNET)) reports that rainfall deficits during the March-April-May 2022 rainy season have been the most severe in at least the last 70 years in Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia. 

The KMD reports show that most of the country remained generally dry during the June-July-August rain season. In July 2022, FEWSNET reported that around 3.7 million people in Kenya’s pastoral and marginal agricultural areas face a hunger Crisis.
